you need to make sure you strech, and I mean a lot, before you run. I run 4-5 miles a couple times a week and I always spend 5-10 min. strechin. Goes without sayin, I streach everything before I lift too, but really concentrate on the muscles I'll be working that day. Also, another common cause is bad running shoes. Don't use cross-trainers, get a good pair of running shoes. Good ones will cost $60 to $80, they'll be lighter, and they're designed to support the foot, keep the correct arc, and hopefully prevent splints. Also, If I don't run for a while, Itake it easy the first couple of times before I really hammer the tred. lol, hope that helps.

Get the top of the line New Balance - should cost just over $100 - it most likely is your shoes.

u sure u dont have flat feet?? ive got terribly flat feet, i get shin splints just from walking... i mean like 5 mins of walking and im ready to die, supposedly my feet are pretty much as flat as they can get... neways, ive got custom orthodics, very expensive but my health plan covers it... now they help quite a bit, but my shins still kill me... the good news is, ill never get conscripted Big Grin

hey bro...

sounds like it's probably your shoes. But I bet it could be caused simply since you're not used to running, as you stated.

How much do you weigh? That's definitely a deciding factor.

Try a treadmill for at least half your workouts, and don't forget to raise the elevationa few degrees to make up for the fact that treadmills are easier...

but with a treadmill it will be alot nicer to your shins...pretty soon you shouldn't have to worry at all. I went to a Pre BUD/S thing and we used to run our asses of but after a few weeks, shin splints were non existent.

i think they give you like 14min's to run the 1.5 miles (plenty of time, but i want to be ready)
& i was 210 but i'm 204 now. i will probably drop to 200 to a more comfortable weight then bulk again later
